Vaultbreakers demo is live now - the Alpha Test runs October 15 to 21, 2026

What is in the Vaultbreakers demo

Quick answer

The Vaultbreakers demo is free on Steam (app 4488770) and went live October 8, 2026. It includes Nymera and Bjornir, part of Wolfswood, the questline up to your first Vaultbreak, and co-op for up to three players.

Quest and challenge HUD during a Vaultbreakers run

The Vaultbreakers demo is free, it is live right now, and it is a real slice of the game rather than a trailer-with-lights. It shipped on October 8, 2026 alongside the Square Enix publishing announcement, and everything in it carries forward: progress moves into the Alpha Test, and Legacy Points survive all the way past launch.

What is in the demo

  • Two playable Vaultbreakers: Nymera, the moth-themed energy fighter, and Bjornir, the ice-armored tank.
  • Part of the first region, Wolfswood, including its onboarding quests and main storyline.
  • Core gameplay systems: perks, ability items, crafting, the Haven and its upgrades.
  • Co-op with up to two friends - a full party of three.
  • The main quest chain up to your first Vaultbreak event.
  • Legacy Points, a progression currency that carries over after launch.

What is not in the demo

BetaDwarf's own patch notes label three Vaultbreakers as "not in the demo": Lumiri, Sparkwing and Thora. PvP also stays locked - that is what the Alpha Test is for. Later Vaults, later regions and the full artifact tree arrive in the Alpha and beyond.

How to install it

  1. Search "Vaultbreakers Demo" on Steam (the demo has its own store page, app 4488770) or open the demo page from the main Vaultbreakers store listing.
  2. Install and launch. The demo requires DirectX 12 - if you have an older GPU, check the system requirements first.
  3. Play the onboarding. The turorial teaches movement, abilities and looting before it lets you into the wider map.
  4. Wishlist the main game if you want, but nothing about the demo is paywalled.

Progress carries over

Two things move forward. Demo progress continues into the Alpha Test on October 15, and Legacy Points earned now remain available after the game launches, unlocking permanent rewards. That makes the demo the cheapest head start available, even if you only dabble.

Known issues in the demo build

The October patch notes list these openly: an infinite loading screen on some launches (retrying fixes it), the inventory opening by itself, and crash risk with exclusive fullscreen mode - switch to windowed fullscreen. One quest warning: abandoning the tutorial's "Emergency" quest can leave you stuck in that match.

The demo reflects an in-development build. Balance and content change between tests - the patch notes timeline records what moved.
